  1. The Village: Rotten Cabbages

11 April, 2011 by Alexa Chipman

Welcome to the piazza area of The Village in part _ of The Prisoner tour of Portmeirion. This is most famous for Number 6 running through it in each opening sequence, although it is also what is seen from the Chess Lawn in Check Mate. If that entire paragraph made no sense, I recommend watching the brilliant series The Prisoner before continuing to read this post!

The Gothic Pavilion fascinated me because it was pink and I liked it. Let me explain: no matter how often I tell myself that pink is merely a tint of red, I still cannot bring myself to like the colour. Mingled with the worn stone and general design of the pavilion, for some reason it worked in this case. I think it is another example of the sheer brilliance of the colour design of The Village. (For those of you who might have noticed the slight adjustment to colours here on Imagination Lane, the addition of the peach was definitely inspired by Number 6′s cottage).

Above is a pathetic fangirl moment of me recreating all of Number 6′s moves in the chess game based on landmarks in stills from the show and relative actual positions of buildings and plants. Before you roll your eyes, may I just say that I was not the only one! I observed at least three other people doing the same thing during my time there.

I have actually been in several living chess matches, and I have to admit Number 6′s behaviour in The Prisoner version was fairly accurate to the amount of concentration players usually put into the game. We are generally at some sort of party already, and we often join sides based on friends who are around. I remember being a knight at one and got so heatedly into a Doctor Who discussion with the black knight (I was a white knight) that neither of us realized one of the chessmasters was yelling at one of us to do our move. It wasn’t until the nearest pawn whacked the other knight with his staff that we realized what was going on.

Yes, there were a few other people there, I snagged this one because she was in very Village-like clothing and seemed to be a fan as well, though not as blatant as some others.

This is part of the piazza getting later in the day. You can see here where the famous “I am not a Number” speech went on during the fake election campaign. They have some lovely benches set all around this pool/fountain, which was most convenient!

Just remember to freeze if Rover comes by, that’s my only advice. I forgot once while I was there and the next thing I knew, I woke up in the building below.

^ This did not happen, the castle is now just a restaurant and perfectly safe, except to your pocket-book

  2. The Village: Orange Alert!

    by Alexa Chipman

What’s the first thing on Number 6′s agenda when he realizes what is going on? Escape of course! While I don’t share his enthusiasm for getting out of Portmeirion (The Village) here is a look at some of the various methods available. You can see here one of the many views of the boggy channels that surround The Village.

If I learned anything about that sand it was “don’t trust it”. What looks like an innocent stretch of beach will nail your trousers almost knee-deep in quick-sand-like mud if you step on it. Fortunately I found it out while wading and there was nothing seriously affected. Another fan was not so lucky! While re-enacting the rover sequence, she fell face-first into the muck. Good thing there was a waterfall nearby!

If you watch the sequence when Number 6 finds a drowned man, notice how deep he is sinking into the sand. That’s on a good section of beach!

Below is the Old People’s Home and you can see the beach there. For those of us that wanted to recreate the opening Rover sequences, it involved some complex jumps and rock hopping to make it safely onto the main beach, no matter what the tide was. Fortunately, a simple Grand Jeté was enough to get me across the narrowest part. There were all sorts of fun messages that people had left written in the sand “I Love Number 6″, the ever popular “I am not a Number” which was scrawled everywhere, and “John Drake is teh Awesome”.

Here I am on the Stone Boat. The one problem about a mostly deserted Village is that there isn’t anyone there to take your picture either. I did get quite good at taking them whilst holding the phone, though.

You can tell it was a little bit of a windy day, I was quite blown by the end of it. That and scrambling about in gorse-bushes when I got lost once coming out of a cavern, but that’s another story.

I had gorgeous weather the entire time I was there. It was chilly, being February/March, but still sunny. I actually had to keep putting sunblock on! In a Welsh winter! Shocking, I know. The stone boat was a lot of fun—I bounced around in it a bit just to hear the “boom boom” it was so odd on board. I’ve spent a lot of time on actual ships so it was really quite disconcerting!

This is out near the point, and I had climbed up into the lighthouse. Talk about neat sound in there! It echoes incredibly well.

There were some yellow flowers blooming at the time, and although you can’t see it from here, the entire hillside up behind was a field of gold! I also walked around on the hiking paths up the hill, in fact let me include another photo at the end of this post to show the view down taken on a different day. The whole area near the lighthouse was fantastic, especially Near Beach with the caves and dripping waterfalls! I clambered about in there for quite a while and got completely dirty and scratched up. Now whenever I watch The Prisoner when he’s scrambling about in the forest I completely feel for him!

  3. The Village: Where am I?

    by Alexa Chipman

On the left is the view looking up from around the corner of Number 6′s cottage. The reason I include it is that it is an an unusual angle that isn’t really utilized in the series (probably due to the set vs Portmeirion time).

For those of you just joining me, this is the second part of the Portmeirion tour aka “The Village” from The Prisoner. Number 6 is a secret agent who resigned and suddenly found himself trapped in a mysterious town where they wish to break him for information. It is a fascinating show that is part psychological thriller, part science fiction, and part fine art. In other words: not everyone who sees it really understands what’s going on, and the rest of us don’t get why they don’t!

As you can see here, there really wasn’t anyone else there, so I got to populate the place in my imagination with lots of people in multi-coloured capes and brollies. The announcement for ice cream seemed to have worked, however, because there were always a couple of people hanging about enjoying some over at one of the ice cream shops.

In Village geography, right down at the end of that lane is the Town Hall, and at the very top is the little shop that sells maps and other misc items for work units. You can catch a cab (local service only) on the street in the top of the photo right by the white and red building near battery square.

Across said square, and across the road in question is one of the two sets of steps that lead up to…the Green Dome! (dum dum duuuuuuuuum)

I’m afraid I got a little bit silly with my audio tour at this point, since it was the buildup to Number 2′s residence. You can hear it in the Portmeirion audio tour: Behind the Scenes of The Village with all my jokes and thanks to Mak’s Number 2 impression. (Thanks Mak!)

Imagining Rover was hustling me up the steps, I clambered eagerly up and the view was well worth it. I can see why Number 2 keeps wanting to eat out on his porch—the entire landscape is stretched out below. Beautiful!

Right now the dome serves as an art gallery. Presumably awards are given in increments of 2,000 work units—enough to buy tapestries.
