5 August, 2011 – 220 miles – Eastern Edge of Midgewater Marshes
This was the last day of “Summer Hours” at work getting off at 3pm, so I took advantage of it to go hiking in Roy’s Redwoods on the way home. That place is honeycombed with trails, although I mostly did the redwood loop. Most of my new book Erfyl is inspired by that area and it was distracting because I kept whipping out a notebook to write down interesting details that could be added in the rewrite!
The picture of the rock was taken for the benefit of the cover illustrator to show what rocks look like in Marin County—mostly lichen covered in the meadow and moss covered in the shade. Since the scene depicted on the cover happens in the open, I snagged one of the former types of rocks. They’ve always fascinated me by breaking up out of all the golden grass on the California hills adding a touch of mystery to the landscape.
