  1. Walk to Rivendell: Eastern Edge of Midgewater Marshes

    5 August, 2011 – 220 miles – Eastern Edge of Midgewater Marshes

This was the last day of “Summer Hours” at work getting off at 3pm, so I took advantage of it to go hiking in Roy’s Redwoods on the way home. That place is honeycombed with trails, although I mostly did the redwood loop. Most of my new book Erfyl is inspired by that area and it was distracting because I kept whipping out a notebook to write down interesting details that could be added in the rewrite!

The picture of the rock was taken for the benefit of the cover illustrator to show what rocks look like in Marin County—mostly lichen covered in the meadow and moss covered in the shade. Since the scene depicted on the cover happens in the open, I snagged one of the former types of rocks. They’ve always fascinated me by breaking up out of all the golden grass on the California hills adding  a touch of mystery to the landscape.

I went for a walk in the rain—I love doing that because you don’t have to worry about sunburn, and there aren’t many people about so you are alone with nature and your own meditations. I only saw a couple of people the entire time.

There were absolutely beautiful flowers and the marsh (yes I was in a marsh for the marshes) had tons of birds everywhere.

I took a photo of myself to show just how tall the plants and flowers are right now—most were well over my head. It was incredible!

On the left you see something very much like the Midgewater Marshes! On the right is a little callout for Scotland :)

The river is starting to rise due to the rain lately—the first this late in the year in many years.

Here are a few hardy souls—a single boat, and a single fisherman! Kudos!

I went for a walk this evening around the convent to look at Christmas lights. They don’t take very good pictures, but I gave it a try. Top left is of the University, and right a private residence, both across the street and gorgeous.

These houses did a fantastic job with lights in the bushes, some of which were extremely colourful but did not pick up with the phone camera.

Some roof decorations that were really colourful with reds and blues. There was another impressive house with similar decor, but they were way up a steep drive and I didn’t think they’d appreciate me wandering onto their property to get a closeup photo!

On the left is another Dominican University photo—there is a lovely tree inside, not sure if it shows up well. The house on the right was drop-dead stunning, but they had huge iron gates blocking anyone from getting near. They literally covered most of the house in lights to the point where you could barely see what was underneath. Amazing!

The one on the left is a house I spotted on a sidestreet after I got temporarily lost in the dark. On the right is the entrance to the main Dominican Convent.

Two more lovely houses I saw on the walk. It was a perfect evening—not too cold, not to warm, and right after a rain so everything felt and smelt fresh and clean.
